Camera and sound check

Before a Risenoow technical interview starts, a short check makes sure the interview will work for you: you can see yourself, you can hear the interviewer, the interviewer can hear you, and your network reaches the interview service. It takes about a minute, and nothing is recorded until you start.

Where: Check my camera and sound on your technical interview invitation page

Who sees it: Candidates invited to a technical interview

Time needed: About a minute

The Risenoow Check your camera and sound page, with a camera preview and level bar on the left, Camera and Microphone pickers, a Connection check that says Connection looks good, and on the right the Can you hear us? sound check with Play the sample, the recording consent checkbox and the I agree, continue button
Your devices and connection on the left, the sound check and consent on the right.

What is on the page

The heading reads Check your camera and sound, with the role name above it and Back to return to the invitation.

Part What it does
Camera preview Shows what your camera sees. The bar under it moves when your microphone picks up sound.
Camera Choose which camera to use, if you have more than one.
Microphone Choose which microphone to use.
Connection check Tests whether your network reaches the interview service. Check again runs it again.
Sound check Listen, then Speak: proves you can hear the interviewer and the interviewer can hear you.
Consent What is recorded, who sees it and when it is deleted.

When an interview has no camera, the preview and the Camera picker are left out and the heading reads Check your sound.

How to complete the check

  1. Allow camera and microphone access when your browser asks. The status line says Camera and microphone ready. when both work.
  2. If the wrong device is shown, pick the right one from Camera or Microphone.
  3. Wait for Connection check to say Connection looks good.
  4. Under Can you hear us?, select Play the sample. A short line plays in the interviewer's voice, in the language of your interview.
  5. When the tone ends, say a few words, like your name and the role. You see "Sound check passed. We can hear you clearly, and you can hear us."
  6. Read the consent text and tick the box.
  7. Select I agree, continue.

I agree, continue stays greyed out until everything is ready. The line under it says what is still needed, for example "Play the sample and say a few words to finish the sound check." or "Tick the box to continue."

The consent text says exactly what happens to the recording. For an interview where the camera is optional it reads: "This interview is recorded. You can choose to keep your camera on or off. The recording and the transcript go to the hiring team for this role and nobody else. They are stored securely and deleted after 90 days. Nothing is decided by the recording alone: real people read it."

The number of days is set by each employer and is shown to you before you agree. If the employer needs your camera on, the text says the interview is recorded with your camera on for the whole conversation. If the interview has no camera, it says the interview is recorded as audio only.

After you agree

The page shows when you agreed. The sound check is marked as passed, and Play it again lets you check again if you change your microphone or speakers.

Start the interview

After you agree, select Start the interview. It opens in a new tab. This page then turns its own camera and microphone off so the interview can use them, and shows Your interview is open in another tab. If you close that tab by mistake, select Open the interview again.

If the button reads Not available, it is not yet time. A booked interview opens ten minutes before your time.

If something does not pass

  • "Your camera is off or blocked. This interview needs it on." Allow the camera in your browser, or pick another camera. Close other apps that use it.
  • "Microphone ready. No camera, which is fine for this interview." The camera is optional for this role, so you can carry on.
  • "We could not hear you." Turn your volume up, check the Microphone choice, then play the sample again.
  • The sample does not play. The line appears on screen instead. Read it aloud and the check listens.
  • "Your connection to the interview service looks slow or blocked." Try another network, then select Check again.

See Devices and troubleshooting for browser permissions on each device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Risenoow sound check recorded?

No. The check listens in your browser only. Nothing is recorded until you start the interview.

Do I have to keep my camera on?

Only if the employer asked for it, and the consent text tells you before you agree. Otherwise the camera is optional and your audio is recorded either way.

Why is I agree, continue greyed out?

Something is not ready yet: your microphone, the sample, or the consent box. The line under the button says which.

Who sees my interview recording?

The hiring team for this role and nobody else. It is deleted after the number of days shown in the consent text.
